Tunnels under the castle hill intersect themselves ca. 11 m below
the castle's inner ward. The older one running the east-west axis and
newest oriented north-south.The older of the tunnels
probably
dates from the late 18th century. Its creation may be related to the
ultimately unrealized Austrian plans for the reconstruction of the hill
and the castle building into a modern defensive stronghold. This tunnel
is entirely made of brick, in the final fragment it was plastered. Its
length is 50 meters. For most of the route, the tunnel has a portal
section, terminated with an arch, with walls clearly narrowing downwards
and a narrow base.
The second tunnel was made during the Nazi occupation of
1939-1945. Most likely, its creation is associated with plans to rebuild
the town during the occupation and connect the most important buildings
with a network of tunnels leading to shelters. The tunnel was entirely
built in the precast reinforced concrete technique. It changes its
cross-section many times. At intersections, we deal with a rectangular
building, on further sections an arched section with a wide base or
rectangular with additional oblique supports and a narrow ceiling
prevails. The length of the tunnel is about 60 meters.
In the tunnels The Interactive Historical Route "Game of
Independence" ( "Gra o Niepodległą" ) has been created. It has the
character of a feature path and relates to the events of the First World
War in Poland (1914-1918).
